The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine voted last week to end its relationship with an energy developer.
Tribal leaders at
Pleasant
Point signed a contract with
Quoddy Bay LNG to host a liquefied natural gas terminal on the reservation. But a council member said the terms of the deal ended.
“It is very simple,” Ed Bassett told The Bangor Daily News. “We determined that it is expired and we no longer have any legal relationship with respect to the lease.”
Some tribal members opposed the project, citing impacts on a sacred site and the environment. They sued the
Bureau of Indian Affairs for approving a lease for the LNG terminal in a lawsuit that was revived by the
1st Circuit Court of Appeals.
