Catawba Nation to use stimulus funds for roads
Thursday, June 18, 2009

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina will receive at least $56,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The money will be used to improve more than 20 miles of roads on the reservation. Some haven't seen any work ind decades.

“A lot of our roads were just pushed in by somebody back in the '50s and '60s,” Denise Williams, a tribal member in charge of road programs, told The Rock Hill Herald. “They'd go in there with their axes and picks and cut the trees down ... and that would be the road.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act contained $500 million for Indian road programs.
