Mining company buys land for Western Shoshone
Thursday, June 18, 2009

A gold mining company has purchased 3,629 acres in Nevada for the Western Shoshone Nation.

Great Basin Gold Ltd. said it wants to protect the site from development. The company paid $825,000 for the land and the mineral rights, which will be retired.

“It’s good news and kind of hard to believe,” Davis Gonzales, the chairman of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone, told The Elko Free Press in response.

The land is along Rock Creek Canyon, which is considered sacred to the Western Shoshone.
