Trial open for murders of Turtle Mountain men
Thursday, June 18, 2009

Two men are on trial for the double murders of two members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians of North Dakota.

Robert Belgarde, 40, and his 19-year-old son, Damien Belgarde, were found dead on September 7, 2001. Their bodies were left on a remote near Grand Forks.

Joseph Moncada, 28, and Billy Jo Aguero, 31, are charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities say the men were drug dealers but their motive for killing the Belgardes is not clear.

The trial began on Monday and testimony is expected to last into the middle of next week, The Grand Forks Herald reported.
