Man apologizes to Indian vendor after 48 years
Monday, June 22, 2009
Filed Under: Arts & Entertainment | National

A Democratic politician from New Hampshire who is considering a run for U.S. Senate is apologizing for haggling with an Indian vendor in New Mexico nearly a half-century ago.

Burt Cohen, 58, was 10 years old when his family visited Santa Fe. He tricked an Indian woman into selling him a $1 bolo tie for 75 cents by saying he didn't have enough money to buy it.

"She gave me a quarter back with a disgusted look on her face," Cohen wrote in a letter to media outlets in New Mexico when he passed the woman a dollar bill. "The disgust became my own ever since that moment."

Cohen served in the New Hampshire Legislature from 1990 to 2004. He wants to run for the Senate in 2010.
