High school won't ban Sherman Alexie's book

Students at a public high school in Illinois will be allowed to read "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," the award winning-book from Spokane/Coeur d'Alene author
Sherman Alexie.
Some parents complained about vulgar and racial language in the book, which deals with an Indian teen who goes to high school with a majority of non-Indians. But the
Antioch Community High School will keep it on the summer reading list and offer an alternative for those who don't want to read it.
"The consensus is, we feel it is a valuable read, a good read," Jay Sabatino, a school board member, told The Chicago Tribune.
The book won the
National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2007.
