Shakopee Tribe runs biomass energy plant
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

The Shakopee Mdewkanton Sioux Community of Minnesota is the joint operator of a biomass energy plant.

The Koda Energy Plant generates heat and electricity by exclusively burning natural products such as prairie grass, oat hulls and wood chips. The electricity can then be sold.

"This is renewable energy. We don’t depend on the Middle East. We get all our materials to burn within 60 miles of the plant,” said general manager Joe Johansen, MinnPost.Com reported.

The project is a joint effort between the tribe and Rahr Malting.
