Consultation sessions set for land-into-trust

The Bureau of Indian Affairs will host three consultation sessions to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar.

The decision restricts the land-into-trust process to tribes that were "under federal jurisdiction" in 1934, when the Indian Reorganization Act was passed. Tribes are worried the ruling will lead to more litigation and put a cloud over pending land-into-trust applications.

"The [Interior] Department is committed to supporting the ability of all federally recognized tribes to have lands acquired in trust and seeks the views of tribes on this matter," assistant secretary Larry EchoHawk said in a June 9 letter.

The sessions take place June 29 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; July 1 in Sacramento, California; and July 8 in Arlington, Virginia.
