Judge asked to mediate Navajo trust fund case

William C. Canby Jr., a senior judge on the
9th Circuit Court of Appeals, has been appointed as a mediator in the long-running
Utah Navajo Trust Fund case.
Canby will meet with attorneys for the
Navajo Nation plaintiffs and the state of Utah next Wednesday. The goal is to try to settle the case.
In 1933, Congress created a trust for Navajos in San Juan County, Utah. The law required the state to manage oil and gas royalties.
Navajo beneficiaries say they have never received an accounting of their funds and that they have lost out on millions of dollars.
