Native woman US Attorney nears end of service
Friday, June 26, 2009

Diane Humetewa is near the end of her service as the first Native woman to serve as U.S. Attorney in Arizona and colleagues are sad to see her go.

“Diane has been an amazing representative,” former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger told Indian Country Today. “It’s unfortunate that the political appointee process is going to remove a really qualified U.S. attorney.”

“It is a loss, for sure,” added John Dossett, the general counsel for the National Congress of American Indians. “But it is not a surprise.”

The White House hasn't officially named a replacement for Humetewa, a member of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona. But the job is likely going to a political ally with ties to the new Obama administration.
