Ojibwe activists in Minnesota fight oil pipeline
Monday, June 29, 2009

Members of two Minnesota tribes are lobbying the Obama administration to reject a proposed oil pipeline that would cross through the Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations.

Tribal members hope Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to reject the project. The federal government has final say because the pipeline crosses the U.S.-Canada border.

Tribal members are also petitioning the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and are filing lawsuits in tribal court. They are upset with leaders of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa for accepting money from Enbridge Energy.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has approved the project.
