Mohawks in Canada to sue over closure of bridge
Monday, June 29, 2009
Filed Under: First Nations | Law

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will sue the Canadian government over the closure of the Seaway International Bridge.

The bridge and a border crossing station were closed after Mohawks in Canada and the U.S. held protests against the arming of border guards. The closure has affected travel by tribal members and has hurt business for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in New York.

The Mohawks say the bridge should reopen without armed guards.
