Massachusetts tribes oppose wind turbine site
Wednesday, July 15, 2009

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe say the Minerals Management Service hasn't consulted them about a proposed wind farm in the Nantucket Sound.

The tribes used to hunt and fish in Horseshoe Shoal, which was once dry land. The entire Cape Cod area is Wampanoag territory.

"MMS has failed its trust responsibility," Mashpee Chairman Cedric Cromwell told The Cape Cod Times.

MMS says it is consulting with the tribes under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Cape Wind, the project developer, says tribal objections will delay the review process.
