Letter: Keep fighting to keep 'Fighting Sioux' nick
Thursday, July 16, 2009

"North Dakota is the freedom state. North Dakota is holding the line.

Our Legislature hasn’t let the federal government bully us into a primary seat-belt law. Our Legislature stood firm against gay rights activists. Homosexuals already are protected from discrimination. We don’t need to know they’re gay, and we don’t need to approve of a deviant lifestyle forced upon us and our children.

Lawmakers held the line, but the war is not over — and we can’t quit fighting.

The battle now is to save UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. In the recent referendum, Spirit Lake Sioux tribal members supported the nickname in a landslide, and many reports say that a referendum on the Standing Rock reservation could yield the same result.

But many nickname supporters already have accepted defeat, and just want to shut the liberals up by giving them their own way. Appeasement didn’t work with Hitler, and it won’t work here, either."
