Brothertown Nation awaits recognition ruling

The
Brothertown Indian Nation of Wisconsin is due to receive a preliminary ruling on its federal recognition petition.
The tribe started the process in 1980. The
Bureau of Indian Affairs promised a proposed finding on June 23.
"It's our heritage, our spiritual unity. We have always strived to stay together," Chairman Rick Schadewald told The Fond du Lac Reporter.
The tribe is made up of descendants of Pequots and Mohegans who left New England in the late 1700s. They initially lived in New York among the Oneidas there but were removed to Wisconsin in the 1800s.
