The
Brothertown Indian
Nation of Wisconsin was waiting for an answer on its federal recognition petition after the
Bureau of Indian Affairs delayed the decision.
The BIA promised a proposed finding on June 23 but the tribe was given a new date of July 23.
Tribal leaders believe they will receive a favorable answer.
The tribe is made up of descendants of Pequots and Mohegans who left New England in the late 1700s. They initially lived in New York among the Oneidas there but were removed to Wisconsin in the 1800s.
