Jury rules against Mayan man in deportation case

A jury in Florida cleared a hospital of wrongdoing for deporting a disabled Mayan man to Guatemala.
Luis Alberto Jiménez, 37, suffered a severe brain injury in 2000 when a drunken driver ran into his vehicle. He was taken to the Martin Memorial Medical Center, which sent him back to Guatemala over the objections of his legal guardian.
Montejo Gaspar, Jiménez's cousin and guardian, sued the hospital for nearly $1 million to cover the costs of health care in Guatemala and for damages. But the jury said hospital acted reasonably even though a state appeals court previously ruled that Jiménez had been unlawfully detained and deprived of his liberty.
No Hispanic or Indian jurors served on the case, according to The New York Times.
