Muscogee Nation seeks help on land-into-trust
Wednesday, August 5, 2009

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma is asking tribes across the U.S. to support its land-into-trust application.

The tribe is sending letters to all tribes and to the National Congress of American Indians. Chief A.D. Ellis said opposition from the city of Tulsa threatens the rights of tribes everywhere.

"I would urge all tribal governments with trust land in and around cities everywhere to consider and respond to this attempt to interfere with tribal relations with the United States government," Ellis said in the letter, The Tulsa World reported. "Our rights are again being threatened."

The city passed a resolution that opposes the acquisition of 43 acres for the tribe. The resolution cites the impact on local tax rolls.
