BIA seeks another extension for surplus land
Wednesday, August 19, 2009

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is seeking another extension to acquire surplus U.S. Navy property for the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts.

Director Jerry Gidner said the BIA needs more time to review documents related to the 260 acres on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. It's the third time the agency has asked for an extension.

The Navy was moving to dispose of the land when the Narragansett Tribe and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe asked the BIA to intervene. The land is within Narragansett and Wampanoag territory but the tribes hadn't been consulted up until the agency got involved.
