Muscogee Nation prepares land-into-trust bid
Friday, August 21, 2009

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation began preparing a land-into-trust application to submit to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a controversial project in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The tribe wants 40 acres placed in trust. Pans call for a new bridge and an economic development project on the land.

Though the process will take years, city officials have already registered opposition. They are worried about the loss of property and sales tax revenue and about the bridge.

Chief A.D. Ellis accused the city of hypocrisy, noting that the Tulsa owns about 12,000 acres in two counties that are exempt from taxes.
