Lummi Nation weighs development partnership

The
Lummi Nation and the
Port of Bellingham, Washington, are considering a development partnership.
The tribe and the port would acquire and develop as much as 100 acres, The Belingham Herald reported.
Documents obtained by the paper indicate the project was almost part of a deal the two parties signed earlier this month to address waterfront issues.
"It's certainly something that's in the works," Commissioner Jim Jorgensen told the paper. "It could be part of the agreement with the Lummis. It may not be, either."
The agreement outlines how the tribe and the port will work together to prevent damage to treaty resources. In exchange for the tribe's support of development projects, the port is offering financial and other benefits to tribal members who fish on the waterfront.
