Media guide depicts UND 'Indian' being chased

A media guide for a recent University of North Dakota-Texas Tech University game featured a "scared Indian" riding on a horse.

The guide went out to select fans and reporters. UND President Robert Kelley was apparently concerned when he saw it, considering the controversy over the school's "Fighting Sioux" logo and nickname.

“I don’t think the image represents the University of North Dakota the way we would like to be represented but I also think it’s impossible to control the behavior of opposing teams," a spokesperson told The Grand Forks Herald.

Texas Tech hired an outside company to produce the guide and didn't see anything wrong with it. "I know there was no malicious intent there," Assistant Athletic Director Chris Cook told the paper.

UND faces an October 1 deadline to gain the support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation for the nickname and logo. So far, neither tribe has officially endorsed "Fighting Sioux."
