Abramoff associate testifies against colleague
Tuesday, September 15, 2009

It was lobbyist against lobbyist in the trial of a former Abramoff associate who is accused of fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

Neil Volz, a former member of Team Abramoff who pleaded guilty, testified against Kevin Ring, another Abramoff associate. Volz said Ring plied the chief of staff to former Rep. Ernie Istook (R-Oklahoma) with tickets, meals and other gifts in hopes of helping lobbying clients.

John Albaugh, the Istook aide, was "going to eat free off our clients," according to an e-mail that Volz talked about in court, The Oklahoman reported.

Albaugh, who pleaded guilty for his role in the scandal, is also set to testify against Ring. At least one other Congressional staffer and a former Interior Department official are on the witness list as well.

Most of Abramoff's top clients were tribes but Istook, who has not been implicated in the scandal, was not known as Indian friendly. He took on tribes on taxation, land-into-trust and taxation issues when he served in Congress.
