Indian parents plan to pursue dress code case

Parents of students on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota plan to continue a lawsuit against a school district's dress code.
The parents will find a new lawyer to pursue the case after the
Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe dropped out. Chairman Joseph Brings Plenty said the tribe still opposes the dress code but won't participate in the case.
The dress code at the
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School
District. was publicized in a local newspaper this summer. The parents say they should have been consulted before the change went into effect.
The school is part of the public school and
Bureau of Indian
Education system. A BIE official said the dress code was adopted to combat "gang-related violence."
