First Nation erects blockade against moose hunt

The Tahltan First Nation of British Columbia has erected a blockade to prevent people from entering a popular moose hunting area.
The band is worried about overhunting in its traditional territory. "Our people depend on the moose for sustenance. Seventy per cent of the people have moose in their freezer," Annita McPhee, the chair of the
Tahltan Central Council, told CBC News.
Native leaders said the B.C. government has refused to negotiate a solution.
"We have a sacred trust to protect the moose population for our future generations," said Tahltan Chief Rick McLean.
B.C. Environment Minister Barry Penner said the moose population is strong enough to sustain a hunt.
