Bill Lawrence shuts down landmark newspaper
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Filed Under: National | Red Lake

Bill Lawrence, a member of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota, has published the last issue of the Native American Press/Ojibwe News.

Lawrence, 70, began the Ojibwe News in 1988 in response to tribal government corruption. His work helped federal prosecutors go after tribal leaders and other politicians.

"Some of his stories provided leads for federal law enforcement, others were dry holes. But when he was right, he was really right," David Lillehaug, the former U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Lawrence is receiving hospice care in Idaho for late-stage cancer. "I am no longer physically able to do the tasks -- computer searches, investigating, seeking ads -- that are necessary to put out an edition," he wrote in one last editorial titled "A good day to die.''
