Rally against 'Fighting Sioux' nickname at UND

Students at the University of North Dakota have organized a rally against the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

Speakers include American Indian Movement activists Clyde Bellecourt (White Earth) and Duane Martin Sr. (Oglala Sioux), United Tribes Technical College President David Gipp (Standing Rock), Erich Longie (Spirit Lake) and North Dakota State University Professor Denise Lajimodiere (Turtle Mountain).

The rally comes a day before the North Dakota Board of Higher Education will discuss the fate of the nickname and logo. The board previously set an October 1 deadline for UND to secure tribal support for the "Fighting Sioux."

The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation passed a resolution to support the "perpetual" use of the name and logo. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe opposes the name.
