Stillaguamish Tribe answers grand jury probe
Thursday, October 1, 2009

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Washington says it is cooperating with an ongoing federal grand jury probe.

Two tribal members and people associated with the tribe were convicted in connection with a smoke shop on the reservation. Three others have since been indicted for supplying untaxed cigarettes to the smoke shop.

The tribal government does not operate the smoke shop. But it has responded to two federal grand jury subpoenas over the past year, an attorney said.

“There’s never been any question that we’ve had two subpoenas,” Steven Ungar told The Everett Herald. “But we’re not the focus. The Blue Stilly Smoke Shop and Native American Ventures is the focus. We continue to fully cooperate with the federal investigation.”

A former executive director for the tribe discussed the subpoenas and has written about other tribal dealings on her blog.
