Another deadline set for 'Fighting Sioux' nick

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education set a "drop-dead" deadline to gain tribal approval of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The board said it would wait until October 31 to hear from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on the issue. If the tribe decides to hold a referendum, the vote will have to take place by November 30.

“[T]he intent of the board is, 60 days from today, we’re done with the issue. It’s either done or it isn’t," board president Richie Smith said, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation passed a resolution that says the University of North Dakota can use the nickname and logo in perpetuity.
