Arapaho court to handle eagle shooting case

A member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming who shot a bald eagle without a federal permit will be tried in tribal court.

Winslow Friday was scheduled to go to trial in federal court today but Judge Alan Johnson said it will be handled in Arapaho court instead. Johnson indicated he might resume the case if it's not resolved in a timely manner in tribal court.

Friday shot the eagle for use in the Sun Dance. A federal judge dismissed charges against him, saying the federal government's eagle permitting process violated his religious rights.

But the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals said he should have applied for a permit or sought eagle parts from the National Eagle Repository. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
