Tribe in Brazil down to last stages of 'genocide'
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

A small tribe in Brazil is expected to die out within a decade after losing its oldest member, according to Survival International.

The Akuntsu are down to just five people following the death of a woman named Ururu. Their numbers were wiped out by ranchers and gunmen during the 1960s and 1970s, Survival International says.

"With Ururú’s death we are seeing the final stages of a 21st century genocide," the group's director Stephen Corry said in a press release.
