Indian enrollment on rise at University of Arizona
Thursday, October 22, 2009

The University of Arizona continues to draw more and more American Indian and Alaska Native students.

The university reported 792 Indian undergraduate students this fall. That's up from 730 in 2008, 631 in 2007 and 545 in 2006.

Indian enrollment has steadily risen since 2001. "[T]he U of A has really demonstrated a commitment to providing a sense of community to Native American students," Amanda Tachine, the director of Native American Student Services, told The Arizona Daily Star.

The university has seen success with its First Year Scholars program, which reports a 70 percent retention rate for Indian students. The school also sends counselors to reservations and has developed partnerships with tribal colleges.
