Standing Rock Sioux Tribe mum on UND nickname
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe hasn't said whether it will hold a referendum on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education set an October 31 deadline to hear from the tribe. But a supporter of the nickname said he doesn't expect the tribal council to take action until next week.

If the tribe decides to hold a referendum, the board said it will wait until November 30 for the outcome. The deadline has been called a "drop dead" one for the nickname and logo.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the "Fighting Sioux." The tribal council passed a resolution to support the nickname and logo in "perpetuity."
