NMAI set to debut 'African-Native Lives' exhibit
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
Filed Under: Arts & Entertainment | National

The National Museum of the American Indian will host an exhibit on American Indians and African Americans from November 10 through May 31, 2010.

“IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas” features photographs and text that depict the intertwining lives of American Indians and African Americans. "I am all of them, my blood is indivisible," guest curator Thunder Williams, who identifies himself as Indian, African and European, told Indian Country.

NMAI worked with the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the exhibit. Curator Gabrielle Tayac, who is Piscataway, said the topic sometimes stirred strong emotions.

“Though sometimes there were things that were uncomfortable, we decided to keep it in the exhibition,” Tayac told ICT. “There are difficult stories; the Cherokee Freedmen on one side, the Buffalo Soldiers on the other. What’s been interesting is people keep coming to us saying, ‘I have a story to tell you about this.’”
