Tribe included in $3.4B 'smart grid' Energy grants
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

The Navajo Nation is part of $3.4 billion in "smart grid" grants announced by the Department of Energy.

The Navajo Tribal Utility Association will receive $4.9 million to modernize its energy delivery system. The smart grid can be used to identify electrical outages, promote energy efficiency and facilitate alternative energy.

"Implementation of smart grid technology can help transform our energy infrastructure in the places we need it the most, like the Navajo Nation," Sen. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) said in a statement.

NTUA serves about 38,000 customers in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

The money for the grants came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
