Standing Rock chair open to 'Fighting Sioux' talk
Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Charles Murphy, the new chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said he is open to discussing the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota but only without the pressure of deadlines.

Murphy said the tribe remains "clearly divided" on the issue. He said choosing sides is "not at the top of the new administration’s list of priority matters.”

“I believe that my administration would be open to discuss the matter but would prefer an open dialogue as opposed to a stipulated arrangement under deadline,” Murphy wrote in a letter to the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.

The board set two deadlines for the tribe to take action on the name. Some officials now believe they will move forward with getting rid of the "Fighting Sioux."

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the "Fighting Sioux." The tribal council passed a resolution to support the nickname and logo in "perpetuity."
