Hundreds of tribes head to DC for Obama summit

Over 400 tribes will attend the White House Tribal Nations Conference with
President Barack Obama, officials said on Tuesday.
Tribes from Utah, South Dakota, Montana, California, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and New York are among those who plan to press Obama on health, education, treaties, sovereignty and other issues. They will get to interact directly with the president and top Cabinet officials for several hours on Thursday.
"Frankly, the last administration did not pay attention to these issues," Interior Secretary Ken
Salazar said on a conference call yesterday.
The meeting takes place at the
Interior Department in Washington, D.C. Obama will deliver opening and closing remarks.
"This conference should do a great deal to enhance communication and relationships between tribes and the federal government, which will be in the best interest of everyone concerned,'' said
Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby, The Tulsa World reported.
The last time a president met on a large scale with tribal leaders was during the Clinton administration.
