Navajo weavers report fewer sales at rug market

Weavers from the
Navajo Nation have been hit hard by the recession.
Traffic at the annual Navajo Rug Show and Sale in Utah was strong. But weavers said fewer people are willing to buy their items, even at lower prices.
"It has been real slow," William Whitehair told The Salt Lake Tribune. Whitehair said he usually sells all of his rugs at the market.
The market is organized by the
Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program. "On the reservation, they are calling it catastrophic," Mary Phillips said of the recession. "Last year, sales were down, but this year, it's just terrible."
