New Mexico tribe recognized for housing project

Ohkay Owingeh in New Mexico won a $10,000 award from the
Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development for a housing project.
The tribe utilized low-income tax credits, loans and grants to fund the $4 million Tsigo Bugeh Village. The 40-unit development helped alleviate a housing crisis on the reservation.
"It's pretty incredible to know that what we are doing is helping our community," property manager Catherine Apodaca told The Santa Fe New Mexican.
Rather than put housing units on separate lots, as was the norm with federal housing projects, the tribe based the Tsigo Bugeh Village on the layout of a traditional, communal-style Pueblo village. The development includes a community meeting space, playground, computer room, weight room, business center and laundry facility.
The tribe is using the Harvard award to develop a web site that will include information about the project.
