Standing Rock chairman not pushing 'Sioux' vote
Thursday, November 19, 2009

Charles Murphy, the new chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, said he won't be pushing for a vote "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

Murphy said the issue is "very, very divisive" for the tribe. He also said he has other priorities he wants to pursue as chairman.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education set a deadline to hear from the tribe and another for the tribe to hold a referendum on the nickname. The first deadline already passed and the second one will likely pass with no action from the tribe.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation already voted to support the "Fighting Sioux." The tribal council passed a resolution to support the nickname and logo in "perpetuity."
