Two plead to taking artifacts from national monument

Two people pleaded guilty to illegally collecting artifacts from the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument in Colorado.

Preston Waggoner and Dawn Laate were banned from the monument for a year and were each $2,500, The Durango Herald reported. They also wrote letters of apology to warn people against taking artifacts from public lands.

The case is separate from the indictments against 24 people who are accused of stealing and selling artifacts from public and Indian lands in Utah.
