Robert Salgado, a longtime leader of the
Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians
of California, was placed in intensive care at the Loma Linda University Medical Center for an undisclosed ailment, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.
Salgado has served as chairman for more than 30 years. He was placed on leave last year after being indicted on bribery, tax and other charges. He has pleaded not guilty.
"This is such a very private matter for our family. Everyone's prayers and concern are very much appreciated," Salgado's sister, Rose Salgado, said in a statement to the paper.
