Soo Tribe's former police chief charged with 15 counts

Correction: Fred Paquin was NOT hired as police chief by the city of St. Ignace. According to a local news report, he was among four candidates who were narrowed down by the city council on January 18.
Fred Paquin, the former police chief for the
Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Michigan, was arrested on Tuesday after being charged with a 15-count indictment in federal court.
Paquin is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the tribe. The alleged theft occurred while Paquin served as police chief and on the board of directors for the tribe.
The indictment came after the city of St. Ignace was considering hiring Paquin as its police chief. More information is available at

“Justice dictates that anyone who conspired to commit or allow criminal activity, be investigated and brought to justice," Payment said today. "That includes Tribal Board members and Tribal administrators if necessary. No one should be immune.”
