Lawsuit for Saginaw Chippewa reservation continues
Friday, January 22, 2010

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan is set to go to court later this year in a lawsuit over the boundaries of the Isabella Reservation.

The tribe wants to clarify the status of the reservation and address jurisdictional and sovereignty issues. The Department of Justice is siding with the tribe.

“It was brought about to protect out tribal boundaries and exercise our sovereignty while protecting tribal members,” spokesperson Frank Cloutier told Central Michigan Life.

The tribe, the state and the federal government are in mediation pending the August 10 trial.
