Self-help guru indicted for deaths inside 'sweat lodge'
Thursday, February 4, 2010

Self-help guru James Arthur Ray was indicted on three counts of manslaughter in connection with the deaths of three people at a "sweat lodge" he organized.

Ray is accused of recklessness that caused the deaths of Kirby Brown, 38; James Shore, 40; and Liz Neuman, 49. The three died after dozens of people were crowded inside a small tent at the Angel Valley Retreat Center in Sedona, Arizona.

The incident prompted state Sen. Albert Hale (D), a member of the Navajo Nation, to introduce a bill that would regulate sweat lodges and other "ceremonies" that take place off the reservation.
