Northwestern Band commemorates 1863 massacre

The
Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation marked the anniversary of the
1863 Bear River Massacre last month.
On January 29, 1863, the
U.S. Army made a surprise attack on the small tribe along the Bear River in present-day Idaho. The massacre was mislabeled as a battle but the truth came to light through Mae Timbimboo Parry, an elder whose grandmother witnessed the slaughter.
The Army counted up to 270 victims but the tribe estimates it lost 400 people.
