The developers of the
Cape Wind project in Massachusetts offered $1 million to the
Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, The Martha's Vineyard Times reports.
A tribal member told the paper that the tribe refused the money. A spokesperson for Cape Wind did not deny a financial offer was made.
"There has been discussion of financial mitigation, that much I can say," the spokesperson told the paper.
The developers have retained a law firm that employs two Wampanoags. Jeffrey Madison is a former council member for the Aquinnah Tribe and Robert Mills is a member of the
Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe.
The two tribes say the 440-foot turbines that are part of the project will block their view of the sun and disrupt burial grounds and archaeological sites at Nantucket Sound. The sound was dry land that was occupied by Wampanoag ancestors.
Wampanoag means People of the First Light. Other tribes in New England use similar terms in their languages to describe themselves.
