Crow Creek Sioux Tribe settles dispute over IRS tax bill
Tuesday, March 2, 2010

The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has settled a tax dispute with the Internal Revenue Service.

The tribe filed a lawsuit after the IRS auctioned 11 square miles of land owned by a tribal corporation. The IRS said the tribe owed $3.12 million in employment taxes, penalties and interest.

The tribe agreed to withdraw the lawsuit after the IRS said the $2.58 million that was raised in the auction satisfied the debt. The tribe has secured a loan to repurchase the land from its current owner.
