County returns seized cigarettes and property to Cayuga Nation
Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Seneca County in New York finally returned tobacco products and property to the Cayuga Nation, 18 months after conducting an illegal raid on tribal land.

The county returned 12,628 cartons of cigarettes, computers and other records on Tuesday, The Syracuse Post-Standard. The move came after the state's highest court said the raid on two tribal smoke shops was illegal.

Cayuga County also participated in the raid and the tribe is asking a judge to dismiss a pending criminal indictment there. Similar indictments were already dismissed in Seneca County.

Both counties have decided to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case.
