Obama 'working' with Congress to authorize trust fund settlement
Friday, July 30, 2010

President Barack Obama mentioned the Indian trust fund settlement at the White House on Thursday.

The Obama administration reached a $3.4 billion settlement to the case last December. Congress has yet to approve the deal amid procedural and partisan roadblocks in the Senate.

"And after 14 long years, we’ve finally settled the Cobell case and we’re working with Congress to get the settlement approved as quickly as possible," Obama said during the signing ceremony for the Tribal Law and Order Act yesterday.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada), the Senate majority leader, planned to add the settlement to H.R.5297, the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010. But Republicans blocked passage of the bill yesterday.

The House has voted twice to pass the settlement. It provides $1.412 billion in payments to individual Indians and creates a $2 billion land consolidation fund.
